We prepare undergraduate students for careers in public health, kinesiology and other allied health disciplines. Our department also works to develop the total fitness, health and recreational sports skills of the general university student through fitness and lifetime sports programs.

This event will bring together students and professionals in occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, dietetics and more to help students connect with leaders in the field, foster cross-disciplinary collaboration and strengthen the regional health care workforce.

  • Treating students like family

    Dr. DawnElla M. Rust, professor of kinesiology and health science, was named the 2018-19 Regents Professor, a title reserved for exemplary university role models and the highest honor bestowed by 91直播鈥檚 Board of Regents upon faculty members.

    鈥淭o me, it means that my passion for the profession and my students was acknowledged,鈥 Rust said. 鈥淢y dedication to the profession is and has been to make a difference in my students' lives. I refer to these students as 鈥榤y kids,鈥 and I truly care about their success.鈥

  • Interning at NASA鈥檚 RehabWorks

    As an athletic training graduate student, Nicole Cardenas made a giant leap of her own when she interned at RehabWorks, the athletic training clinic at NASA鈥檚 Kennedy Space Center. Cardenas worked daily with multiple patients. She conducted evaluations of musculoskeletal injuries, created rehab designs, closely interacted with clinicians, worked with a variety of therapeutic modalities and completed daily charting and patient education.

    鈥淚t was such an amazing opportunity,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 not only saw some of the space program鈥檚 historic treasures, like Neil Armstrong鈥檚 spacesuit, but I also heard stories from incredible people who all contribute to the space program and put so much time and effort into the future of space exploration.鈥

  • In the Human Performance Lab, 91直播 students can conduct research by using high-tech equipment, practice concepts learned in class in a lab setting and train with equipment they will use in their future professions.
  • Public health students prepare for a variety of careers in public health education and health promotion in settings such as hospitals, governmental agencies, nonprofit organizations and worksite health promotion programs.
  • Graduate students in 91直播鈥檚 athletic training program gain real-world experiences at diverse professional settings. Students have found opportunities to intern with the NFL, NBA, WNBA, MLB, MLS, Olympics, NASA and ESPN Wide World of Sports.

  • Isania Bazan

    Isania Bazan

    An American College of Sports Medicine Certified exercise physiologist and graduate student at 91直播, Isania is utilizing her skills in the cardiac rehabilitation department at Nacogdoches Memorial Health Hospital. 

    鈥淚 love my job because I get the chance to help patients live healthier lives,鈥 Bazan said. 鈥淚 help patients learn about their risk factors for heart disease and assist them with lifestyle changes. I design a personalized exercise prescription for every patient based on the patient鈥檚 needs and abilities.鈥

  • Casey Pederson

    Casey Pederson

    For Casey, her second year at 91直播 made her realize that she had 鈥渂eyond a doubt picked the right school.鈥 A kinesiology major, Pederson has expanded her 91直播 experience to include serving as an Orientation leader and community assistant in the residence halls. 

    鈥淲hat surprised me the most about my education was how much our professors in the kinesiology department and all over campus care about our success,鈥 she said. 鈥淵ou hear all kinds of stories in high school about how professors don鈥檛 care if you pass or fail, but that is just not true about 91直播.鈥

  • Zach Gin

    Zach Gin

    Zachary competed in the student bowl competition at the Texas American College of Sports Medicine Conference, which pitted him and two other 91直播 students against students from universities across Texas. Gin showed off his knowledge by answering 鈥淛eopardy鈥 style questions about kinesiology. 

    He said, 鈥淧reparing for that competition really helped me excel throughout my courses at 91直播. I honestly believe all the professors in the kinesiology department go above and beyond expectations to help students gain the most from their education.鈥
