Trammel鈥檚 Trace, named for Nicholas Trammell, was the first route from the United States into the northern boundaries of Spanish Texas. From the Great Bend of the Red River it intersected with El Camino Real in Nacogdoches. By the early nineteenth century, Trammel鈥檚 Trace was largely a smuggler鈥檚 trail that delivered horses and contraband into the region. It was a microcosm of the migration, lawlessness, and conflict that defined the period. Evidence of Trammel鈥檚 Trace remains across seven Texas counties. Pinkerton and a group of fellow 鈥渞ut nuts鈥 are actively engaged in educating and informing landowners to enlist their support in preserving this part of history. Copies of Pinkerton鈥檚 book on the trace will be available for purchase.
